PIECHS ends season strong

As the 2024-2025 school session nears its completion, most, if not all, of the Port Isabel Early College sporting programs have concluded for the year.

The PIECHS girls’ softball team closed out their season in 4th place in the district standings. In the Bi-District playoffs, the PI girls’ softball team lost to Zapata in a best 2-out-3 game matchup (15-0, 18-0). District 15-4A swept District 16-4A in the Bi-District matchups as Robstown beat La Grulla 15-4, Tuloso-Midway beat La Feria 7-2, and Calallen beat Valley View 15-0.

The PIECHS girls’ track team captured the district title. The track program as a whole qualified a higher-than-normal number of athletes for Regionals. Included in the girls’ division were Elle Wall, Layla Mata,
Escarlet Urrutia, Emily Burrage, Angely Diaz, Julieta Ruiz, and Lizbeth Perez. In the boys’ division, Luis Ramos, Cleveland Smith, Christian Smith, and Jesus Gaitan, all made it to Regionals. Ch. Smith secured a 2nd
place finish in the Triple Jump event and was the lone PI track athlete to advance to the State Meet.

Competing with the best in the state, Ch. Smith finished in 8th place in the Triple Jump with a distance of 42’-10.75”. He recorded his personal best of 43’-11.75” in the regional meet.

In golf, Justin Garza earned 1st place in four district meets and qualified for Regionals. He also was named District 32- 4A “MVP” in All-District nominations.

The PIECHS girls’ tennis team of Kirin Cantu, Valeria Ruiz, Aylin Ramirez, and Alejandra Gonzalez finished their season as district champions and are headed to the regionals, held May 7-10th.

In summer track, girls’ head coach, Johvonne Hernandez Howard, had her children participate in the Clash of Texas, Summer Track Meet 1. Six-year-old D’Anthony Howard finished in 5th place in the 7-8 Javelin
throw with a distance of 40-‘07”. Meanwhile, 10-year-old, Jayda Howard was a triple bronze medalist after throwing 29’-10” in the 11-12 Shot Put event, 57’-06” in the 11-12 Discus event, and 70’-01” in the 11-12
Javelin event.
