Return of Hettie May

Moments in Time is a collection of recovered newspaper briefs and other publications, compiled by
local historian, Steve Hathcock, offering a look back at the history of the Rio Grande Valley.

Corpus Christi Caller: Captain William Anderson returned from Point Isabel with the Hettie May
yesterday afternoon and put to rest the fears that were entertained regarding this safety.

He lost 1500 lbs. of fish because of the delay in getting off, on account of the storm, the fish had spoiled.

He says the storm was quite hard at Point Isabel, the wind blowing down trees that have stood for 30
years. Houses were also blown over. A boxcar was blown along the railroad track to Brownsville, where it
crashed into and smashed some other cars.

The captain rescued a party consisting of Captain Jeff Kennedy and his family and others from Brazos
Island, where they had been camping in tents. They were knee deep in water when he had reached them. He
had to sail 2 miles across the bay to them in the teeth of the heavy gale, a brave deed which may have saved
them from drowning.

He says the lumber schooner Emma Thornton was caught out in the storm and we got in by throwing her
deck load overboard. A sloop ran across the Hettie May while she lay at anchor and they both were dragged
against the wharf, and the Hettie May was somewhat but not seriously damaged.

W. H. Broker, of San Antonio, who has been down at Brownsville on business and who came upon the
Hettie May, says Captain Anderson proved himself a brave man and a fine sailor, went where others were
afraid to go.

The Hettie May, made a quick trip, leaving Point Isabel at 4:00 PM Sunday, and arriving here at 4:00 PM.
Monday, 24 hours from place to place, including the delay of an hour at Corpus pass.
