Port Isabel High School has chosen its valedictorian, Azul Albino, and salutatorian, Nicole Fleming, two young women defined by relentless effort and years of dedication. Their accomplishments are a clear reflection of their commitment to academics.
For Azul Albino, the title of valedictorian came after years of single minded focus. “Ever since I was young, I strived to get the best grades I possibly could,” she said. Her purpose ran deeper than the gradebook. “My main motivation was my parents. They’ve sacrificed so much for me, so I wanted to make them proud.”
The news of her ranking didn’t stun her but it struck deep. “I was quite shocked, but not totally surprised,” Albino said. “I have worked so hard and have spent so many nights studying in order to boost my GPA, so I was more happy than anything when I found out my ranking.”
Nicole Fleming, named this year’s salutatorian, walked a path carved deeply by her consistency, a solid foundation built in childhood. “Yes, ever since the start of elementary school, academics have always been a priority,” she said. Quiet determination has a way of rising, even when it isn’t expected. “I was extremely surprised when I found out that I was the Salutatorian for the class of 2025,” Fleming said. “For the past year, I had been ranked 4, so I didn’t expect to go up. When the top ten reveal came around, I couldn’t stop crying because of how shocked I was.”
Their achievements didn’t arrive by accident. They arrived by choice. Daily ones. “Through hard work comes great rewards,” said Albino. “If you manage to put all of your time and effort into your future, you’ll see great benefits.”
Fleming’s message carries quiet strength. “I believe my classmates should learn to never doubt themselves. I didn’t think it would be possible to get this far, but with countless hours of studying and working hard, I pulled it off.”
To their classmates and peers, they offered grounded advice. “Take advantage of all of the opportunities given to you, and don’t forget that there is always help when you need it,” Albino said. “Whether it be through family, friends, or school staff, you can always reach out for help whenever you need it.”
Fleming added the importance of showing up, year after year. “Every year counts. This doesn’t just go for academics but also extracurricular activities. It is extremely important to show that you are able to stay dedicated throughout your 4 years of high school.”
Beyond academics, both students have shown dedication to their community. Recently, they were featured in The PRESS for the “Senior of the Week” segment. The two gave motivational speeches at Garriga and Derry Elementary’s kindergarten graduation ceremonies. Albino and Fleming spoke to students, encouraging them as they prepare to enter first grade. Fleming’s heartfelt speech at Garriga Elementary brought many in the audience to tears, leaving a lasting impression on the young graduates and their families.
Both are Austin-bound. Albino shared her plans for after graduation: “I plan to attend UT Austin and major in Chemistry. After earning my degree, I plan to attend dental school in order to achieve my dream of becoming a dentist.”
Fleming also has her sights on the University of Texas, her future still unfolding, she revealed: “I plan to attend the University of Texas at Austin and live with my older sister. Although I am unsure of what my major will be, I have high hopes for what the future holds.”
Years of grit and late nights, their fortitude at the forefront, ready to carry them forward as this chapter of their lives comes to a close. These two leaders will stand poised to shape a better world, their focus steady, their minds clear, and their hopes set on the future.
The Port Isabel High School graduation ceremonies are set to be held on Friday, May 23rd, at 7:00 p.m. at Tarpon Stadium.
