The Port Isabel Tarpons 7on7 team competed once again this past Wednesday, May 14, in the Brownsville 7on7 league. The Tarpons kicked off the day with a 26-14 win over St. Joe. Then, in the second game, the competition ramped up against the Brownsville Lopez Lobos.
The Lobos got off to a good start as they picked up an interception in PI’s first drive. Lopez then marched down the field and scored a touchdown in their own drive to make it a 6-0 game.
The Tarpons’ offense regrouped and scored on a 38-yard pass play from QB Bryan Martinez to Luis Ramos.
Edward Garza nabbed the reception for the extra point try, giving the Tarpons a 7-6 lead.
Keeping the Tarpons’ defense on their heels, the Lobos quickly answered back with a 45-yard touchdown reception right before the half as Bro. Lopez led 13-7 at halftime.
As the second half resumed, PI QB, Martinez, then led his team on a 6-play touchdown drive capped by a 2-yard TD by Michael Finona. Highlight play of the drive came by Logan Bennett, who had a nice 16-yard reception to put the Tarpons in scoring position.
The Tarpons’ defense stiffened up and held the Lobos to a 3-and-out.
In their final possession, the Tarpons drove down the field methodically and with precision. Picking up chunk yards, 5, 7, 10, 16 yards at a time, until Finona once again closed out the drive with a 2-yard TD reception. Garza caught the crucial extra point try to tie the game up at 20-20.
With the game winding down, the Lobos made a strong push to score once more. After managing to reach the Tarpons’ 6-yard line, Lobos’ final throw landed out of bounds as the game time expired. Game over, 20-20 tied game.
The final championship games will take place on Wednesday, May 28. The top four teams will play the final two games, which will settle the final standings (1st through 4th place). Games start at 6 p.m.
