REVENUE CUTTER WRECKS ON PADRE ISLAND
The United States revenue cutter Alma was driven on Padre Island Texas, during the storm and all on board escaped to land. The party separated and each party wandered over the island looking for a sail. James
McHenry, and Sharp Terry of San Antonio, sighted a craft and signaled it and were taken off the island and brought to the shipyard at Corpus Pass. Yesterday, another vessel was sent to Padre Island to look for the rest of the Alma’s passengers, who are, Captain Celestin LaRoche, and John LaRoche of Point Isabel, Henry Terrell of San Antonio, and Walter Huddle of Sabine Pass, special treasury inspectors. They had sufficient food to last them for a week. (Waunakee News, Waunakee Wisconsin Feb 2, 1899)

OWNERSHIP OF PADRE ISLAND TREASURE IN QUESTION
The Padre Island Treasure case was taken over by the federal court today, and a federal judge said the Texas antiquities law will not protect it.
An Indiana salvage firm is trying to recover the treasure that divers pulled out of an old Spanish ship off Padre Island. The treasure itself, which consists of everything from gold and silver to cannons and navigation instruments, is being held under a state order at the Balcones Research Center in Austin.
The federal judge said only the international salvage law would pertain to the case, because attackers antiquity law was not in effect when the treasure was salvaged. The judge also told the state courts to take no further action until he rules, and he told the state to make no attempt to dispose of the treasure. (WBAP-TV (Television station : Fort Worth, Tex.)
