Concerns over safety and explosion risks tied to SpaceX rocket launches and proposed methane gas (LNG) facilities are prompting renewed community action in Cameron County. Local organizations are hosting a
public meeting on Thursday, July 24, from 6- 8 p.m. at the Port Isabel Community Center to raise awareness and gather input from residents.

The event is organized by the South Texas Environmental Justice Network (STEJN), Border Workers United, and the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas. Organizers say the goal is to educate the public on the
potential dangers posed by both existing rocket launches and future industrial development near residential and ecological areas.

“Our homes have been shaken by explosions, windows shattered, and debris has fallen from the sky,” organizers stated. “Now, three highly flammable methane gas projects are planned within six miles of the
SpaceX launch site—where rockets have already caused fires and environmental damage. This is an unnecessary risk to our low-income community.”

The meeting will feature presentations from safety experts and community advocates detailing the explosion hazards associated with both industries. Organizers also plan to gather firsthand accounts from residents affected by past rocket activity and industrial growth in the region. A peaceful protest will follow the meeting.

Food and refreshments will be provided, and additional meetings are planned for other locations throughout Cameron County in the coming months.

Community members interested in attending can RSVP at sotxejn.org.
