Former Port Isabel High School multi-sport athlete, Will Camacho wrapped up his senior year competing in Track & Field for the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). After signing with the Cardinals on a track scholarship,
Camacho enjoyed four successful years competing in a variety of events, including the 60 60-meter dash, 100 meters, 200 meters, 4×100 relay, 4×400 relay, triple jump, and long jump. Camacho’s performances in the events contributed to UIW’s 3-peat Southland Conference track championships (2022-24).
This past May, for the first time in his track career, Camacho qualified for the NCAA D1 Regional Championships in the Long Jump event. The meet was held at Texas A&M, College Station. Camacho was just one of two UIW track athletes to advance to the championships.
On UIW’s Facebook post prior to the meet, Camacho expressed his thoughts on reaching the Regional Championships: “It feels amazing to qualify and be able to compete there because it was my senior year, and I always wanted to be at that level.” Said Camacho. “I want to go out, get a new personal best, and hopefully qualify for the Nationals.”
At the championships, Camacho faced off against many talented athletes. He finished with a jump distance of 7.18m and came in 33rd out of 43 competitors. Charles Godfred (Minnesota) won the event with a distance of 8.10m.
Camacho had previously set a Long Jump personal best of 7.56m back in April of this year. Other personal records he set while at UIW were triple jump (14.88m), 60-meter dash (7.00), 200 meters (22.07), and 100 meters (10.66).
While at PIHS, Camacho was the District Champion in the triple jump, long jump, 100-meter, and 200 200-meter dash. During his senior year, Camacho made it to the state track meet, where he won the bronze medal in the triple jump with a distance of 13.62m.
Camacho is currently studying business management and works at the local SPI Beach Waterpark during his summer breaks.
