Tarpons Football camp a success

This past week, the Port Isabel Early College High School coaching staff wrapped up their annual “Future Tarpon” football camp.

Before the events started, participants were registered, then given a customized t-shirt designed specifically for the camp. The kids were then separated into two groups: elementary students and junior high/High School students, and they waited for further instruction.

The free, two-day event brought in 65 kids and introduced the sport of football to kids as young as five by teaching them football fundamental skills such as passing, receiving, and running the ball.

The event also gave older participants (up to incoming freshmen) a leg up on what’s to come when the real practices begin in the first week of August. Besides also learning the basic skills like the younger kids, the older participants worked on more advanced skills like play-calling, secondary coverage, blocking, and gap assignments. They also ran a complete play, often running the play in a step-by-step slow slow-paced process instructed by head football coach, Tony Villarreal.

The camp benefited not only players, but coaches as well, as it provided a jump start to coaching once again after enjoying their summer break. On a side note, the PIECHS coaching staff recently returned from the 93rd Annual THSCA Coaching School and Convention held in San Antonio, TX, on July 20-22.

High School football practice is set to begin on August 4th, and players are encouraged to bring in their paperwork prior to practice. Those players who are unable to get the paperwork ahead of time can get their free athletic physicals and required school vaccinations onsite during the “Tarpon Wellness Fair” held on August 4, at Tarpon Stadium from 8:30 to 11 a.m. Free school supplies will also be offered on a first-come, first-served basis.
