On Tuesday, August 12, the Port Isabel Lady Tarpons volleyball team hosted the IDEA Frontier College Prep Lady Chargers in a non-district, best-of-3-out-of-5 match.
In the first set, the Lady Tarpons received the ball and set up Nadia Flaig for her signature big spike, which the opponents were unable to handle. A few plays later, the Lady Chargers returned a serve by Kymberlie Estradra, but Flaig blocked the ball at the net to give the Lady Tarpons an early 4-0 lead. The Lady Tarpons followed it up with an Ace by Estrada and a spike by Layla Mata, forcing Frontier to call a timeout.
Trailing 7-0, the Lady Chargers returned a serve, but the ball hit the net and fell on PI’s side to give Frontier their first point of the set. After securing the point at the net, Flaig went to serve the ball, and the team went on to build a 10-1 lead.
After a couple of substitutions, the game became more competitive as Frontier cut the Lady Tarpons’ lead down to 13-6. Midway into the set, Rachel Martinez set the ball up for Flaig, who once again came down with a thunderous spike. PI then called a timeout as they held a 15-8 lead. As play resumed, Frontier then went on a small run before Flaig’s spike made it a 17-11 game.
The teams went on to trade points, but PI still maintained its lead as it now led 21-15. Approaching the end of the set, PI’s Ashlyn Wright’s spike gave PI a 23-17 lead. A hit out of bounds by Frontier gave PI the 25-19 win as the Lady Tarpons took the first set.
The second set was more competitive from the get-go, but the Lady Tarpons won by the same 25-19 score. The Lady Tarpons won the final set 25-14 to win the match.
Up next for the Lady Tarpons will be a volleyball tournament starting on Thursday, Aug 14, featuring some strong teams such as Stephenville, Beeville Jones, Crowley, and Calallen.
