Tarpon’s Sharp Football Practice

By: Constancio Martinez Jr

The Port Isabel Early College High School football team is in the midst of the second week of football practice. This past Saturday, the team wrapped up its first week of practice by holding its annual blue-white intrasquad scrimmage at Tarpon Stadium.

The team will be making some scheme changes to the offense this season. With the overall success shown by the 7on7 summer team, head coach Tony Villarreal said the team will be utilizing the spread/shotgun formation a lot more this season, calling the new scheme “new, different, fresh”.

After a warmup, the scrimmage began with the first team offense taking the field, showcasing its new look. Although the offense had some mistakes while running out of the formation, they also ran some successful plays.

The offense managed to drive down the field by not only passing the ball out of the formation, but also running out of it, showing the potential of utilizing the formation.

The quarterbacks had more cushion between themselves and the defensive players at the start of each play, which gave the QB an extra two or three seconds to successfully complete a pass.

As they switched over to first-string defense, the group seemed to be a more cohesive group, showing their dominance over the backup offense. The whistle often came quickly, as the stout defense broke up plays, often for a loss of yards. Junior player Ryan Cinfuegos, seemed bigger, stronger, and unblockable.

Prior to the game, head football coach Tony Villarreal met with the players’ parents to introduce his coaching staff and explain what to expect from the upcoming season.

Coach Villarreal noted that due to the success of the Jr. High School football teams the last few years against the smaller classifications and even some of the 6A middle schools, the Jr. High football teams will now be playing against the Brownsville schools this season.

He also encouraged parents to help keep the players in the “straight and narrow,” as he noted some players got into trouble last season, which led to some missed games.
