Laguna Bob will take on a different energy this Wednesday as Friends of Animal Rescue brings the community together for its annual “Raise the Ruff” fundraiser. The casual bayside venue will host raffles, live music and spirited auctions, all to support the nonprofit’s long-awaited building fund.

For more than a decade, the group has worked out of its current shelter, a place that has saved countless lives but has also revealed its limitations. “We want a friendly environment for our homeless animals, room for us to separate the cats from dogs, an area for vetting both shelter animals and an after hours clinic for our residents and tourists,” said Jacky Conrad. “The new facility will also include day care and boarding, room for events such as dog training, kids’ programs, and a gathering spot for animal lovers.”

Everyday needs underscore that vision. The shelter is currently home to three nursing mothers with their kittens and puppies, who struggle with the stress of barking dogs nearby. In addition, three dogs undergoing heartworm treatment require calm and quiet surroundings. “Being able to isolate these animals in a quiet environment would be helpful,” Conrad said.

The evening will be filled with more than good intentions. Guests can look forward to raffles, music and a robust auction. “The highlight of the event is the live auction packages. We have over 70 donated items, that will be put into packages for our live auction,” Conrad said. “These packages include, our foodie package, two private concerts from local musicians, fishing trips, staycations, home decor, and spa and jewelry. We have something for everyone.”

The partnership with Laguna Bob also tells a story of community loyalty. About 10 years ago, the owners stepped forward to help Friends of Animal Rescue cover the cost of its current building. “Their generous offer to host the event has been much appreciated. The venue is a great fit due to its size and popularity with the locals. The staff and management team are easy to work with,” Conrad said.

Last year, “Raise the Ruff” brought in $80,000, a milestone that helped propel the shelter’s efforts. This year, the focus remains on the building fund. “Friends of Animal Rescue’s work is sustained by fundraisers and donations. Our ability to do what we do is based on how we are supported by the public,” Conrad said.

The theme itself reflects years of resilience and collaboration. “Raise the Ruff has always been the theme for the event. The monies have been used to help with major building expenses in the past from a new roof, air conditioners, windows and paying off our current building,” Conrad said. “I love the community support and coming together for the animals. The FOAR staff is always impressed by the community support at this event. The event is a fun time that is enjoyed by everyone as it is a casual, beautiful bay side event.”

Music will help set the tone, adding rhythm to an evening built around compassion and camaraderie. For those unable to attend, support is still welcome. “Donations are always needed. There are many ways to donate: CashApp $spifoar PayPal: spifoar@gmail.com, our website www.spifriendsofanimalrescue.com. They can also call 956-299-0032 to make a credit card donation or stop in at 4908 Padre Blvd. Checks can be mailed to PO Box 2126, South Padre Island, TX 78597,” Conrad said.

What Friends of Animal Rescue hopes most is that the public continues to believe in the project. “There have been a lot of questions as to why we haven’t started the building yet. I hope they haven’t given up on us,” Conrad said. “We are wanting to have as little debt as possible. We are still working to cut costs, hear about grants that have been applied for, and raise enough to cover our expenses. It is important we get started on the building, yet at the same time we need to know we can sustain our venture as we are responsible for over 800 animals per year.”

The fundraiser is not only about raising dollars, but about strengthening a lifeline for the island and surrounding area. Friends of Animal Rescue responds to emergencies, provides shelter, and serves as a steady resource for both residents and visitors. “Raise the Ruff” is a celebration of that work, and of the community that makes it possible.
