This past Friday night the (1-2) Port Isabel ECHS Tarpons picked up their first win of the season as they ran all over the (0-3) Valley View Tigers in a non-district matchup. Port Isabel now holds a 12-0 lifetime win record over Valley View.

From the start of the game, Port Isabel’s “Seawall Defense” had their way against the Valley View offense as they held them to -5 yards in their first possession.

Meanwhile, the Port Isabel “Tidal Wave” offense had no problem on their end as it took the Tarpons just two plays to score. RB, Luis Ramos (7 carries, 145 yards) 44-yard touchdown run down the sidelines gave the Tarpons an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter.

As the Tigers tried to attack through the air in their next possession, PI’s safety Grayson Estes nabbed an interception as the Tarpons’ defense declared it a ‘no fly zone’.

On the Tarpons next possession, they went on a 5-play scoring drive capped by Bryan Martinez’s 18-yard quarterback keeper. Martinez also had a nice 24-yard pass play to RB, Angel Dominguez (1 rec, 24yds; 3 car, 93 yds) during the drive. Port Isabel 14, Valley View 0.

The Tarpons wasted no time in their next possession as RB Dominguez burst free for a 76-yard TD run, and the Tarpons now led 21-0. A few minutes later, RB Eli Alvarez dashed up the middle for a 42-yard TD run extending PI’s lead to 28-0 with five minutes left in the second quarter.

After the PI defense held the Tigers to a 3-and-out, the PI offense just needed one play to score once again as RB Jesus Ramos bolted free for a 49-yard TD run. Port Isabel 35, Valley View 0.

With less than two minutes to go in the first half, the Tarpons scored one more time on a 59-yard TD run by RB L. Ramos. Port Isabel headed into the halftime break with a 42-0 lead.

As the second half resumed, PI recovered fumble by VV deep in Tigers’ territory. Two plays later, RB Dominguez scored on an 18-yard TD run to make it a 49-0 game with 7:59 left in the third quarter.

The Tigers managed to score in their next possession as Valley View turned a quick pass to the sidelines into a 64-yard TD pass play. PI’s Edward Garza blocked the extra point kick made it 49-6 PI.

The Tarpons went on to score 14 more unanswered points on TD runs by Alvarado Rocha for a final of 63-6.

The Tarpons ended the night with 474 total yards (446 rush, 28 pass), while defensively holding the Tigers to 169 total yards.

On the progression of the offense, Offensive Coordinator Mark Calvillo stated, “first couple games we made a lot of mistakes as an offensive group, that hurt us big time and our chances of winning. Our team learned a lot as well as our young coaching staff. We will continue to get better each game.”
