At Derry Elementary School in Port Isabel, four outstanding students have been recognized as Students of the Week for their kindness, enthusiasm for learning, and positive attitudes.
From pre-kindergarten, Melissa Andrade enjoys the school playground and playing with friends. After school, she loves riding her bike and playing with her Barbies. Melissa dreams of becoming a cook one day and shows kindness by listening carefully to her teacher and classmates.
Kindergarten student Leila Blanco says her favorite part of school is making friends and playing with them. After the school day ends, Leila enjoys spending time with her little brother and playing with toys. She aspires to become a doctor and demonstrates kindness by being friendly and including everyone.
In first grade, Victor Carreon’s favorite subject is counseling with Mrs. Soto because she is nice and they do fun activities. Victor especially enjoys playing with friends on the playground. At home, he likes to talk with his mom and hopes to grow up to be a firefighter. He shows kindness by inviting others to play and making sure everyone feels included.
Second grader Raquel Puente Villarreal appreciates counseling with Mrs. Soto for its relaxing environment. She also enjoys the cafeteria food, cozy classroom corners, the library, and the egg chairs. After school, Raquel likes riding her scooter. When asked what she wants to be when she grows up, Raquel said she wants to be a mom—proof that some career goals come with the sweetest job description! She shows kindness by helping friends carry their books and playing cooperatively with others.
These students exemplify the spirit of community and kindness that Derry Elementary fosters every day. Congratulations to Melissa, Leila, Victor, and Raquel on this well-deserved recognition!
