The Laguna Madre Education Foundation (LMEF)—an affiliate of the South Padre Island Chamber of Commerce—has officially reemerged with renewed purpose, fueled by a generous endowment and a shared commitment to strengthen the island’s economy and support Chamber members. Originally founded in 1996, the foundation was decommissioned around the time of the pandemic.

“We’re really looking at supporting the skills and trades that make our island and these businesses work,” said Wendy Knight, Chairman of the Chamber’s Board of Directors.

During last week’s Coffee & Conversation meeting, led by Jeanette Greider, President of the Chamber, board members outlined how the foundation’s relaunch aims to help non-traditional students access financial assistance that can change the course of their careers.

There is no age limit for applicants seeking an LMEF scholarship. Eligible candidates include adults re-entering the workforce, high school graduates not pursuing a four-year degree, and individuals seeking certifications in high-demand trades. Applicants must be “Chamber Adjacent,” meaning they are Chamber members or employees/students of a Chamber member.

“I’m really loving the opportunity we have through this endowment to resurrect the LMEF and home-grow our own talent around here,” said Kyra Hudson, President of the Laguna Madre Education Foundation.

Scholarships will prioritize those planning to stay and work in the Laguna Madre area. Eligible programs include HVAC, welding, dental or medical assisting, CDL licensing, culinary arts, and hospitality management—fields chosen to strengthen the region’s core industries.

Applications are available as a fillable PDF on the Chamber’s website. The deadline for this scholarship cycle is October 29, 2025, with recipients to be announced at the Holiday Magic Gala on November 15.

Each scholarship will award up to $5,000, potentially covering full tuition for many certification programs. Applicants must submit two letters of recommendation from Chamber members and an essay describing their career goals and how they plan to contribute to the local community.

LMEF’s mission is clear: learn local, earn local. By investing in education and workforce development, the foundation aims to boost both individual opportunities and the economic resilience of the Laguna Madre region.
