BROWNSVILLE—A 16-year-old Brownsville boy died Sunday after the ATV he was riding on overturned near Boca Chica Beach, authorities said.
Cameron County Sheriff Manuel Treviño reports that Joseph Cruz, 18, of Brownsville, was a passenger on the ATV when the crash occurred. Three other occupants suffered minor injuries and did not require hospitalization, according to Treviño.
The sheriff said it appeared the ATV was traveling at a high rate of speed when it rolled over. Emergency crews arrived at the scene and pronounced Cruz dead at the location.
Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash. No further details have been released about the other passengers, and it was unclear whether anyone involved was wearing safety gear.
The tragic accident highlights the risks associated with off-road vehicles in the area, which is popular with residents and visitors for recreational activities near the beach.
