Commander American Legion Post 498 Philip Rosenlund says this weekend’s Wreaths Across America ceremony offered the Port Isabel community a meaningful opportunity to pause, reflect, and honor those who have served and sacrificed for the freedoms Americans enjoy today.
The wreath-laying ceremony will take place Sunday, December 14, at 10:00 a.m. at the Port Isabel Cemetery, bringing together veterans, families, local businesses, and residents in a shared act of remembrance.
“For our community, this is an opportunity to pay respect to those who have fought for our freedom,” Rosenlund said. He noted that American Legion Post 498 was proud to lead the effort alongside a major local sponsor, PlainsCapital Bank, whose support helps make the ceremony possible. “It’s something we’re honored to be part of.”
Rosenlund emphasized that Wreaths Across America differs from Memorial Day observances, which are often centered on families honoring their own loved ones. This ceremony, he explained, expands that moment of reflection to the broader community. “On this day, communities, businesses, veterans, and non-veterans can pause together and reflect on the courage and sacrifices others have made for our freedom,” he said.
At the heart of the event was a promise not to forget. Rosenlund described the wreath-laying as a visible commitment to honoring veterans whose service has shaped the nation. “This day is the answer to a promise that we will not forget those who have given so much to so many because of their courage and sacrifices,” he said.
One aspect of the program that has particularly impressed Rosenlund is the involvement of young people. He praised local schools for teaching students to honor veterans and for encouraging respect through school programs, especially on Veterans Day. He believes this engagement helps ensure that the meaning of service and sacrifice is passed on to future generations.
Looking ahead, Rosenlund encouraged continued community involvement beyond this weekend’s ceremony. “Communities in our area can continue to support veterans by joining programs such as Wreaths Across America,” he said, noting that ongoing participation helps keep veterans’ stories and sacrifices at the forefront year-round.
The December 14 ceremony was open to the public, and residents are encouraged to attend, reflect, and help honor those who served.
