After going 4-6 in non-district, the PIECHS boys’ soccer team has regrouped for district play and are now atop of the district standings with a 5-1 district record.
In last week’s early game, the La Feria Lions defeated the Tarpons 3-1, with the teams now even at one victory apiece this season. Then on Friday’s game, the Tarpons sealed the win against IDEA Riverview via penalty kicks after a scoreless match in regulation and overtime. The win was a chip knocked off the Tarpons’ shoulders as Riverview had defeated the PI twice already.
Prior to the penalty kicks, head coach, Chris Ortiz recalled his goalie, Luis “Pechuga” Ulloa, tell his team, “I have your back, and I need you to have mine. I’ll block as many shots as I can, and I need you to make yours”.
As the teams started to take turns during the penalty kicks, Riverview’s first kick went astray as it struck the goal post. A steady and confident, Domenic Roustand successfully made the goal giving PI a 1-0 lead. It was Roustands’ fourth penalty kick of the season.
Riverview then made its next kick to make it 1-1. Port Isabel’s reliable Cordoba Luna came through on his attempt as PI retook the lead, 2-1.
Rain-soaked players missed their next shots, as the two teams were down to their final two attempts.
After a successful kick, Riverview tied the game at 2-2. PI’s Edgar Ulloa then made a crucial kick to give PI a 3-2 lead. A tremendous save by goalie, L. Ulloa secured the victory for the Tarpons.
Coach Ortiz was pleased how the team has adapted to the changes he’s implemented and how the team evolved. “The Tarpons have adapted well to new tactical approaches and continue to show growth in game management, particularly in high-pressure situations.” Said coach Ortiz.
Approaching the midpoint of the district play, the Tarpons lead will be challenged by (4-1) IDEA Riverview, (4-1) La Feria, and (4-2) Santa Maria.
Port Isabel will be hosting Santa Maria on Friday, February 6 then IDEA Robindale on Tuesday, February 10, both game starting at 7 p.m.
