Cameron County officials will mark the completion of major improvements to Bejarano-McFarland Memorial Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony scheduled for Friday, April 10, 2026, at 10 a.m.
The park, located at 235 E. Michigan St. in the Laguna Heights community, has undergone a significant transformation, adding a wide range of new amenities designed to serve residents of all ages while highlighting the natural beauty of the nearby Laguna Madre.
Among the upgrades are a Universal Design splash pad and playground, a picnic pavilion, covered basketball court, renovated restrooms, and improved walking trails with solar lighting. Visitors will also find arbor bench swings overlooking the water, bike racks, benches, a butterfly garden, native landscaping, and educational signage throughout the park.
The project was funded through a grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department Non-Urban Outdoor Local Park Program, along with Cameron County Certificates of Obligation. Phase I of the project totaled approximately $2.6 million.
Additional phases are already in the planning stages, including $1.5 million for Phase II improvements and $3.1 million for the future Laguna Madre Nature Center within the park. With the recent acquisition of adjacent land, the total investment in the park is expected to reach about $8 million.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said the project represents a major step forward for the Laguna Heights community.
“This ribbon cutting marks an exciting milestone for the Laguna Heights community,” Treviño said. “These improvements reflect our commitment to creating spaces that bring people together while showcasing the natural beauty of the Laguna Madre.”
Precinct 3 Commissioner David A. Garza said the upgrades will provide a more inclusive outdoor experience.
“These enhancements provide a well-rounded outdoor experience for individuals of all ages and abilities, and we look forward to seeing the community enjoy this revitalized park,” Garza said.
Cameron County Parks and Recreation Director Joe E. Vega added that the investment will benefit both residents and visitors.
“This investment enhances quality of life for Laguna Heights residents and visitors alike, creating a destination where families can enjoy the scenic Laguna Madre Bay,” Vega said.
The project was designed by Gomez Mendez Saenz Architects, with C&A Builders serving as the general contractor. Additional partners included Spanco Building Systems, Clarke Design, and Exerplay Inc..
