The South Padre Island City Council unanimously voted in support of a proposed ordinance that prohibits the use of plastic bags at the point of sale in the city.
The action came a day after an ordinance banning plastic bags went into effect January 5 in Brownsville.
The SPI ordinance provides a voluntary ban on plastic checkout bags from February 1 to December 31, 2011, with mandatory compliance starting January 1, 2012.
“We have a duty to protect our natural environment and I believe residents as well as our many visitors expect us to take the steps necessary to do so,” councilwoman Alita Bagley said at the Wednesday night meeting.
