The University of Texas at Brownsville welcomes acclaimed jazz singer and pianist Carol Welsman at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12 at The Arts Center.

Welsman’s performance continues the Signature Series and also opens the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts’ Latin Jazz Festival.

“I would describe her as smooth jazz, very, very listenable,” said Dr. Dan Barnard, Director of The Arts Center. “We are excited to partner with the Brownsville Society for the Performing Arts to bring her performance to Brownsville.”

The “honey and whiskey” voice and piano virtuosity of the Canadian artist has earned her five nominations for a Juno Award – the Canadian equivalent of a Grammy – and with several Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards.

Fluent in French, Italian and English, Welsman also sings in Portuguese and brings international rhythms to her work that complement both the festival and the Signature Series theme of presenting high-quality performances with a “Latin influence.”

Welsman won the “Female Vocalist of the Year” award for 2010 in the CDN Smooth Jazz competition. Her most recently album, “I Like Men: Reflections of Miss Peggy Lee,” received a Juno nomination as “Best Jazz Vocal Album” and was voted a Top 5 Album Pick of the Year for 2009 in USA Today. Reviewers complemented her “exquisitely understated piano and voice readings” and praised the album as “a gracious little gem.”

She also has written lyrics for various international recording stars including Celine Dion, Ray Charles and Nicole Scherzinger of the Pussycat Dolls.

After a successful inaugural run, this year’s Signature Series promises both a diverse range of performances and the same dedication to excellence that patrons have come to expect at The Arts Center, the university’s state-of-the-art new performance hall.

“This season has something for everyone including dance, world music, jazz, family entertainment, and the best mariachi group in the world – all at surprisingly affordable prices,” Barnard said.

Patrons are encouraged to purchase early, as limited lower-priced seating is expected to sell out quickly. Season and multi-performance tickets offer attractive discounts off the regular single-ticket price. Arts Center members receive additional discounts, as well as special benefits such as reserved parking and invitations to members-only events.
