The City of South Padre Island will enact a law, as of Jan. 1, 2012, to outlaw plastic grocery bags from the Island.
This decision was made earlier in the year in order to attempt to control the amount of litter on the beaches and in the ocean.
South Padre Island Mayor Bob Pinkerton said, “We passed it with a voluntary response for the first period. Starting January 1, 2012 its mandatory and we just felt that plastic bags created an ecological and environmental problem on the Island.”
The change in policy will not only affect businesses that provide plastic bags to carry goods, but it will also affect the average person.
