A $5 donation for a tasty plate of fish will help benefit the all-volunteer Laguna Vista Fire Department.

Scheduled Feb. 28 at the fire station, 235 Santa Isabel, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., the fish fry is designated as a fundraiser to help offset costs of a growing volunteer firefighting force in Laguna Vista, according to Fire Chief Robert McGinnis.

“Proceeds from the fish fry will go for training and equipment,” he said.

“We are extremely short on bunker gear right now. Our department has grown from 15 to 23 over the last year and we have not been able to keep up with gear for the volunteers,” the chief added.

The fish fry, and its cause, are being well-received by area residents, with printed tickets sold out, but walk-ins are welcome, according to McGinnis. The meal will include one-half pound of fish, fries, coleslaw and all condiments. Plates will be prepared to go, or dine-in at the fire station.

Citing as an example of the department’s growth, the chief said, “We also just had five more volunteers graduate from the State Firemen’s and Fire Marshals Association of Texas Basic firefighters course. That brings our number of SFFMA basic firemen to 10, including four full state-certified firemen,” McGinnis said.

“On the medical side, we currently have one certified emergency medication attendant – intermediate level, five emergency medical technicians – basic level, 10 emergency care attendants and one volunteer in paramedic training at this time,” he added.

The Laguna Vista Volunteer Fire Department continues to recruit volunteers. No previous experience is required, and the department will furnish all necessary training and equipment.

Volunteers have provided fire protection to the town for many years, and volunteers continue to play a vital role in the town’s emergency preparedness and response operations. The department works together to provide high quality, cost-effective fire suppression and first responder services.
