Despite expectations, voter turnout low

The field of 11 candidates for the state’s new 34th Congressional district dropped to four Tuesday night following the primary elections, according to unofficial numbers released by the Texas secretary of state’s office.

Filemon Vela, after winning 40.46 of the vote, will face Denise Saenz Blanchard, who took 12.89 percent, in the District 34 Democratic runoff.

Vela carried the Democratic primary with 10,389 ballots cast in his favor during early voting and 18,223 total. Saenz Blanchard took 2,994 during early voting and 5,805 in total..

In the Republican runoff, Adela Garza, who received 36.22 percent of the vote, will square off against Jessica Bradshaw, who accounted for 34.62 percent.
