The Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce held its June regular meeting Friday.

Guest speaker Steven Bearden, Port Director for the Port Isabel-San Benito Navigation District, said the port has plans to work more with offshore oil and gas to produce more jobs in the area.

By 2014, a contract will be negotiated to bring in 400 welding jobs to the port, Bearden said. These jobs will be higher paying to compete with other employers in the state.

Bearden said the port is working to establish a relationship with Pemex, the national oil company of Mexico, to service their offshore oil platforms. He said eight ships would be traveling between the port and platforms that are 60 miles offshore providing up to 700 jobs.
