George Kersey paced nervously around his boat. He’d check the lines, then the hull. After more pacing, Kersey checked the lines again; though, nothing had changed in the two minutes since he’d last looked at them.

“I want to go fast,” Kersey said. “I’m sick of waiting around.”

For 17-year-old Kersey, Wednesday marked his first attempt to conquer the Great Texas 300, a catamaran race beginning in South Padre Island and ending 300 miles up the Gulf coast in Galveston.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the race. Up and down the beach near the Tiki Condominiums, 10 teams of two waited to set sail on their journeys into the ocean.
