The 12 U Lady Tarpons along with VFW post 8791 collected money for local disabled veterans outside of Walmart on Wednesday.
Irene Camacho, Post Commander, said they exchanged red poppies for contributions to assist veterans. She said hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a wage.
The VFW was the first to promote a nationally-organized campaign for the annual distribution of poppies assembled by American disabled and needy veterans, Camacho said. They were named the “Buddy Poppy.” She said all the poppies sold benefit veterans, their needy dependents or their orphans.
