Officials from the parks and constable offices vowed to make changes in the way they approach littering on county beaches in the form of more trash barrels, more code enforcers and stricter punishments.
Parks Director Javier Mendez, Precinct One Constable Horacio Zamora and Justice of the Peace Bennie Ochoa discussed how the county tackles trash problems on the beaches during the commissioner’s court meeting Thursday in Brownsville.
Commissioners grilled the three officials for nearly an hour while dozens of beachgoers listened. Commissioners received hundreds of emails from people last week complaining about litter on the beaches, prompting County Judge Carlos Cascos to add the issue to the court’s agenda.
