Each day, Lisa Garcia reports to work at her dream job. The new superintendent of the Port Isabel Independent School District said she’s worked for years to become a superintendent, specifically of Port Isabel.

“This is my last stop,” Garcia said. “I plan to retire here.”

Garcia’s last stop is one of many on a winding road that eventually led her to South Texas.

Born and raised in Knoxville, Tenn., Garcia graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1984 with a degree in special education. She first taught in Maryville, Tenn., before moving to Marathon, Fla. where she continued teaching special education. While in Florida, she earned a Master’s degree in educational leadership and administration from Florida International University in 1990.
