Laguna Vista is on track to ban the issuance of plastic bags in the town limits.
Officials last week approved the first reading of an ordinance prohibiting the use of plastic carry-out bags in local establishments.
With only one retail facility operating here, the Stripes Convenience Store on Hwy 100, no opposition is anticipated, City Manager Rolando Vela said. In fact, he added, upon contacting the store manager for his reaction to such a measure, enthusiastic support for the proposal was given, Vela said. “I asked him what he thought of the ban, and he told me he was all for it. He said that the clerks put an item into a bag for a customer and then when they get outside, they throw the bag on the ground,” he added.
