Three painting workshops to start soon

Special to the Parade

Award winning Brownsville artist Marilyn Brown will be at the Laguna Madre Art Gallery on Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 12 noon during January to teach watercolor painting.

The cost of the class is $150.00. Class size is limited to eight students so sign up at the Gallery at 405 E. Maxan in Port Isabel, or call (956) 943-1407 to reserve your place in the class. Classes start January 3. This class is recommended for artists of all abilities.

Brown will also be teaching a Monoprint Workshop on Monday, January 14, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gallery. Monoprints/monotypes are basically printed paintings. This workshop combines printmaking, painting and drawing mediums. Brown explains that participants will “experiment with the additive and subtractive method of creating the plate and (will) also combine the two methods. “The monoprints can be finished paintings or can be refined with colored pencil, crayons and pastels. According to Brown, “There are a lot of unpredictable results involved and excitement is in the spontaneity of the process.”

A complete list of supplies you need to furnish is available at the Gallery. Call the Gallery at (956) 943-1407 or visit the gallery to sign up. Space is limited. Artists of all abilities will enjoy using their creativity in this class.

Local artist and gallery member Marne Law will be teaching an “Illusionary Painting Workshop” on January 6, 7 and 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gallery. Many of Law’s Illusionary paintings are on display and are for sale at the Gallery. In Illusionary paintings, subjects are repeated throughout the painting and appear transparent. In this workshop students will learn Law’s method of using “clean, pre, transparent watercolor washes.” According to Law, “Students will make their ordinary paintings into extraordinary paintings and they will have a better understanding of good design done in a fun way.”

It is limited to 15 students. Sign up and get your supply list at the Gallery or call the Gallery at (956) 943-1407. Artists of all abilities can participate.

Marne Law is one of the Laguna Madre Art League artists showing and selling their work at Market Days at the Convention Center on the Island January 11, 12, and 13. See her illusionary paintings there as well as at the Laguna Madre Art Gallery. The sale will be in Rooms 1-4.
