Special to the Parade
January 22-26 is Mystery Week at Paragraphs Bookstore on South Padre Island.
Four mystery writers will be on hand at the store, one each day, Tuesday, January 22, through Friday, January 25. All four will then be featured in a group discussion and signing on Saturday, January 26.
The first discussion will be on Tuesday, January 22, between 1-3 p.m. and presented by author David Harry, writer of “Padre Paranoia.”
His book surrounds a Zephyr military surveillance plane that captures a brutal murder on a sandy beach 10 miles below. Then, a US Senator suffers a fatal heart attack just as he is about to cast the deciding vote to defeat legislation that would drastically curtail the military. Agents Jimmy Redstone and Angella Martinez have two days to find answers to several questions. Was the Senator murdered and if so is there a connection to the murder on the beach. Even worse, is there a military insurrection behind it?
“Murder is for the Birds,” by Pat Avery will be the topic on Wednesday, January 23. The discussion will be from 1-3 p.m.
“Murder is for the Birds,” takes place in the Port Isabel/South Padre Island area and is a neat story that is brought closer to home by the inclusion of local sites and businesses. A murder, a manuscript, an angry author and an overbearing editor all come together to challenge Luke and Hap to step in and solve another murder. Hap, a retired Kansas City policemen, with Luke the dog, help their neighbor, Rachael newly promoted Port Isabel Police Inspector, to piece together the clues of this bizarre case.
“Username,” by Joyce Faulkner will be the featured book on Thursday, January 24, from 1-3 p.m.
“Username,” took 35-years to research and write. “I began studying the world of serial killers in 1975 when a young woman I knew was murdered. It was clear she’d been taken by a monster and that terrified me,” Faulkner explained. “In the 1990s, I began working with the internet. As the director of eCommerce for a large corporation, I learned just how easy it is for someone to jury-rig the system to their own advantage – and the detriment of others.
“Another Colorado Kill,” by Bob Doerr will be featured on Friday, January 25, between 2-4 p.m.
In “Another Colorado Kill,” a three day golf trip that was supposed to be fun and relaxing turns into disaster when Jim and his “friend” Edward “Perry” Mason discover a dead body in the men’s room at a roadside rest stop. A heart attack and two dead bodies later, Jim discovers that murder can become personal. Forget the golf, Jim just wants to go home. Unfortunately, the police want him to hang around. The killer wants him gone – one way or the other. The ultimate confrontation takes Jim out of his comfort zone and into a role he has only played out once before. But is it a role that he can survive?
There will be a panel discussion and signing with all four authors on Saturday, January 26, between 2-4 p.m.
This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.
