Windstorm insurance rates topic of meeting

Special to the PRESS

gavelArea lawmakers and the public are invited to take part in a TWIA (Texas Windstorm Insurance Agency) meeting hosted by the City of South Padre Island and the Hilton Garden Inn at 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 30.

Charles Zahn, representative for the Texas Coastal Coalition, will provide an update on TWIA reform legislation and regulatory negotiations. SPI Mayor Robert N. Pinkerton, Jr. urges the public to attend and join in the process of coming up with solutions to stabilize windstorm insurance rates.

“It is important that the public attend this meeting in order to learn the difficult process and the problems confronting the windstorm pool which will affect all insurance rates especially on the coast,” said Pinkerton, Jr. “Public support also needs to be shown so that your public officials at all levels can effectively represent you during this legislative session.”

TWIA legislation affects coastal counties, including Cameron and Willacy, and affects anyone with windstorm insurance and also auto, boat, motorcycle and other casualty coverage.

“The ability to have windstorm insurance coverage, to those of us who live and work on the Texas Coast, is a matter of utmost importance,” said Zahn. “The Coastal Windstorm Task Force has developed a plan to provide windstorm coverage to the Texas Coast that meets the requirements of adequacy of coverage and fairness of rates. This plan also addresses many of the areas such as the existing claims handling process that have been a cause of the problems Texas Windstorm Insurance Association is experiencing after Hurricane Ike.”

Make plans to attend to learn more about how TWIA affects you.
