The issue seemed in doubt in the first half as Port Isabel took a seven-point halftime lead while scoring only 18 points.
“I wasn’t very happy by halftime,” head P.I. coach Alan Ward said Wednesday before practice. “We played better offensively (in second half). The first half we were taking too many shots too quickly, and we had better decision making in the second half and got better quality shots.”
The Ladies led 13-6 at the start of the second quarter, 18-11 at the break, and 36-11 at the end of the third quarter.
“We dusted off a defense we’d used earlier (in the season) in the second half to contain their best player, and we managed that because we shut them out in the third quarter.”
Alex Martinez led Port Isabel in scoring with 22 points and in steals with 13, and also pulled down seven rebounds. Kelcie Swink led the team in rebounding with 18 boards, scored 12 points, made seven steals, and handed out four assists. Flor Gonzalez had eight points.
It was the first game of the second half of the district season and the Ladies got the sweep of the Lady Red Ants, winning the rematch by the same margin as in the first game at home back on January 4. Port Isabel took that one, 61-28.
The Lady Tarpons are now 3-2 in district play and stand second in District 32-3A behind Rio Hondo at 5-0.
The JV team also came out ahead in their game, winning by the score of 30-18.
The Lady Tarpons and Tarpons return to Tarpon Gym this Friday when La Feria will be the opponent for both squads. The girls’ varsity game will tip off at 6:30 p.m., followed by the boys’ varsity at 8 p.m.
