Special to the Parade
Artist Shirley Hawthorne, a resident of Port Isabel who spends half of the year in her home states of New Jersey and Delaware, is one of many artists of the Laguna Madre Art League who will display their work at Market Days at the South Padre Island Convention Centre.
Presently, Shirley is the featured artist at the SPI World Birding Center. The 38 paintings of birds and their Texas habitats in the show are mostly pastel with some oil and acrylic paintings.
Shirley also presently has two oil plein air pieces in the LMAL’s show at the Treasures of the Gulf Museum in Port Isabel. Currently she is doing a series of oil still life paintings which feature local Valley fruits and produce. These will be included with her work on display with the Laguna Madre Art League Show in rooms 1-4 at the SPI Convention Center at Market Days, Feb. 22, 23, and 24.
Other LMAL artists who will be at the Market days are Marne Law, Carol Thorson, Carol Jones, Tom Leeman, Becky Crowill, and Lucy and Jerry Dennison. Original oil, watercolor and acrylic paintings, prints and cards, jewelry, wood sculpture, and special Island art and gifts will be featured in this show.
No additional fee is required to enter the LMAL show. Rooms 1-4 are located at the end of the main entrance corridor in the hallway to the left. The LMAL will be selling raffle tickets to win original art at the show. Proceeds go directly to a Scholarship Fund for two Port Isabel High School Senior Art Students.
