baseball gloveLaguna Madre Little League will be expanding to include 50/70 baseball, softball and challenger divisions to better serve the community.

Little League Director Raul Loera said the expansion has been in the works for over two years. He said the challenger division has been established with the help of the Point Isabel Independent School District.

“We’ve made arraignments with Dr. Garcia, with their help this division could not exist and parents sound excited,” Loera said.

The division will have two challenger teams. Two more 50/70 teams will be added as well.

The 50/70 division is designed for kids in junior high looking for a more challenging field. Loera said the division plays more of a high school type game.

A T-Ball softball team will also be added. Loera said the 4-6 year olds will now be on a more even playing field.

“Some of the boys in that age division are big, so we decided to make a division to give girls a chance to compete,” Loera said.

Loera said the League is still searching for volunteers to coach teams as well as sponsors. He said they need as many as possible.

“You get to learn a lot from these kids, and all it takes is a willingness to volunteer, the fun will keep you coming back,” Loera said.

Loera said prospective volunteers can contact him to pick up necessary paperwork to begin.
