track and fieldIt was another strong performance by the Port Isabel High girls’ track and field team last week as it finished a close second at the Jim Hudson Relays in La Feria on Friday.

The Lady Tarpons totaled 170 points as a team and finished 11 points behind team champion San Benito. La Feria was third with 124 points, followed by Rio Hondo in fourth with 44 points.

Port Isabel collected four gold medals on the day. Helena Loya won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet 2 and three quarters inches, Alexandria Martinez took first in the pole vault with a best effort of eight feet, six inches, and Daniella Murchison got her second double gold of the season by winning the shot put (37 ft., 11 in.) and the discus (129 ft., 1 in.).

“I’m very pleased with the overall effort…of the team,” head girls track coach Sylvia Torres said this week. “The girls fell short of beating San Benito, but with two members missing it’s still pretty impressive.”
