ProBAR to host ‘Havana Nights’ at SPI

Special to the Parade

ProBAR, the South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project, invites the public to attend its benefit gala entitled “Havana Nights on South Padre Island.”

At this event, slated at the Hilton Garden Inn on the Island, the McAllen-based band “Grupo Sazón” will electrify the crowd with their rhythmic Latin dance music. The event will be held from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Friday, April 26.

Located in Harlingen, ProBAR was created in 1989 by the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas and the American Immigration Lawyers Association. ProBAR staff and volunteers provide legal education and representation to indigent immigrants and asylum-seekers held in detention by the immigration authorities. Currently there are 1,200 adults and 707 unaccompanied children detained on immigration violations in the lower Rio Grande Valley. These individuals hail from all over the world and may be fleeing persecution and other forms of abuse and violence. ProBAR mentors pro bono attorneys to provide high-quality legal assistance to asylum-seekers, abandoned and abused children, crime victims, trafficking victims and others. ProBAR staff and volunteers help improve efficiency in the courtroom and enhance due process of law in removal proceedings.
