Rangers intercept drug load

PRESS Staff Report

emergency-lightsTwo alleged drug smugglers were apprehended off of County Beach Access 5 earlier this week, officials said.

Cameron County Park Rangers arrested the suspects, whose names have yet to be released, Tuesday night at Beach Access 5 as Cameron County Park Rangers were patrolling the vast and sometimes desolate beach. According to officials, the men were unloading 383 pounds of marijuana from a boat when they were spotted.

According to park rangers, a patrolling officer flashed a powerful spotlight on the beach and noticed a boat near the shoreline carrying marijuana. The ranger also noticed an individual holding the marijuana standing next to a car.

The vessel retreated back into open waters when the rangers arrived on the scene.

Officials said that while it’s not uncommon for the area to be used as an exchange area for smugglers, Tuesday’s incident is the first noteworthy seizure for park rangers since they were reinstated in the beginning of the year.
