Havana Nights on SPI returns Friday

Special to the Parade

ProBAR – the South Texas Pro Bono Asylum Representation Project – invites the public to a benefit gala, “Havana Nights on South Padre Island.”

The event will be at the Hilton Garden Inn on South Padre Island from 7 p.m. to midnight on April 26, with Grupo Sazón of McAllen entertaining the crowd with Latin dance music from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The event will be held at Hilton Garden Inn on South Padre Island.

ProBAR provides legal education and representation to indigent immigrants and asylum-seekers detained in South Texas. It serves both adults and unaccompanied children detained in the Rio Grande Valley on immigration violations; currently there are 1,200 adults and more than 700 children being held in detention in the Valley.

The detainees come from all over the world and may be fleeing persecution and other forms of abuse and violence. ProBAR mentors pro bono attorneys to provide high-quality legal assistance to abandoned and abused children, crime victims, trafficking victims and others. ProBAR staff and volunteers help improve efficiency in the courtroom and enhance due process of law in removal proceedings.

ProBAR was created in 1989 by the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas and the American Immigration Lawyers Association.

Proceeds from “Havana Nights” will support the work of ProBAR. To purchase tickets, call Meredith Linsky at (956) 425-9231 or e-mail probar@sbcglobal.net.
