Pirate Days in Port Isabel nears

Pirate DaysThe Lighthouse Square Merchants of Port Isabel are donning their pirate costumes, brushing up on “pirate talk,” and getting their stores ready for Pirate Days on May 4.

From 11 a.m. until 5 p.m., participating merchants will have special deals for shoppers, restaurants will have meal and drink specials, and the Black Dragon Pirate Ship will be offering half price cruises all day. Local musicians will be performing all day at Jack and Will’s Burger Shack and Fire Eating Pirate Wilsome from the Black Dragon will be roaming the square with his motley pirate crew. Amazin’ Walter will also be at the festivities to make his imaginative balloon creations. From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., children can go on a “scavenger hunt” by visiting participating merchants to have their scavenger hunt maps stamped. After getting their maps stamped they will be given a certificate with the designation “Official Pirate of the Black Dragon.”

Local artist Virginia Eggert, well known for her paintings of local scenery, will be drawing portraits of Pirate Days visitors for a fee from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and throughout the day other local artists will be setting up their easels and selling their wares on the sidewalks. From 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. the staff of Will and Jack’s will be face painting outside the Hamburger Shack and Faro Mercado.

At 2 p.m. the Canon Throw contest will be held for kids and adults on the west side of the Lighthouse. At 4 p.m. the Best Pirate AAAARRRGH contest and Best Pirate Costume contests for both adults and kids will be conducted by the Black Dragon pirates at Black Jack’s. Wannabe pirates of all ages can display their skills in acting, talking, and dressing like a pirate. Prizes, prizes, and more prizes from Pirate Ship tickets to pizza certificates, to jewelry, to a melting clock and more will be given to winners of the events and there will be free door prize drawings for everyone.

After dinner the City of Port Isabel and the Museums of Port Isabel are presenting the movie “Hook” on the Lighthouse at 8:30 p.m. Concessions will be provided by the Museums. Be sure to stow some blankets or lawn chairs in the car before you drive down to Pirate Days.
