Area unlikely to see major effects of spill

As of press time Thursday, roughly 170,000 gallons of tar-like oil was floating around Galveston Bay, located just 400 miles northeast of the Lower Laguna Madre.

The spill occurred over the weekend when a barge carrying around 900,000 gallons of oil collided with a vessel in the Houston Ship Channel.
