On Tuesday afternoon, the Port Isabel Tarpons went on the road and came home with a 64-59 overtime win against Brownsville Frontier Academy.
The Tarpons trailed virtually the entire game and rallied from four points down late in regulation to tie the game up and send it into overtime.
With 14 seconds to go, Jose Atkinson stole the ball and fed Fernie Lopez for the tying layup.
Port Isabel rose to the occasion in the extra period when they outscored the Chargers 9-4 and held them without a field goal. Their only points came on four foul shots. “We really did a great job in overtime,” Port Isabel High School Head Coach Nathan Janak said.
Janak was extremely pleased with the way his team played, especially the defensive effort. He said, “We contested shots and we blocked out and got the defensive rebounds. The defensive rebounding was key tonight.”
Frontier Academy led 19-14 at the end of a quarter of play, 31-30 at halftime, and 44-42 at the end of the third quarter. Fernie Lopez tied the score at 55 with seconds to go in the fourth period. That was the score at the start of overtime.
The Tarpons’ shooting percentage was up but Janak still sees much room for improvement on offense. Janak said, “ We’re still getting good shots but we’re still missing too many. We should have won by double digits.”
The name of the game tonight, though, was defense. “I couldn’t be happier with our defense,” Janak said. “This was by far our most complete game this year. They were intense, focused, and were really into the game.
The Tarpons will play their district opening game on Jan. 2, 2015 at Raymondville. The freshmen game is scheduled for an 11:00 a.m. tipoff. The junior varsity game will follow at 12:30 p.m. and the varsity contest should by underway by 2:00 p.m.
On Jan. 6, Grulla will visit Tarpon Gym for Port Isabel’s district home opener, and the following Friday the team will be at Hidalgo.
