Renovations to the Keeper’s Cottage, part of the Port Isabel Lighthouse, which began in August, are nearly completed. The planned maintenance included the repainting of exteriors and repairing the staircases. The towering structure, which has undergone several renovations since its construction in 1852, was originally built as a guide for incoming ships through the Brazos Santiago Pass into the area and remains one of the last lighthouses in Texas open to the public. The 82 ft. high brick beacon is operated today as a Texas State Historic Site and remains an integral part of the Laguna Madre community, not only because of its history, but as a foundation for a number of recurring events such as drawing in seasonal tourists and outdoor movie screenings.
