The South Padre Island community will be welcoming a new public park initially named, SPI City Park.

“It will be a multi-generational type park,” said Jodie Hughes, Chairman of the Park Recreation and Beautification Committee. “We’re really excited. This will be our first huge endeavor. The grant we received kind of blew our minds.”

The city received a $400,000 grant from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission last week, but the completion of the ambitious 2-acre park, located in the grassy area between the Travel Lodge hotel and Sunset Boulevard, will likely require an additional $250,000 to $300,000. The park will provide daily recreational activities and ideally will include two soccer fields, a basketball court, a skate park, a trail and a playground, all of which will have spacious parking according to the layout.

The first phase of the development would include execution of site grading and utility installation, toilet and initial construction of a water pump building, basketball court, and playground. Landscaping and assembly of exercise benches, a splash pad and additional play courts will follow in future phases.

The entity who will handle principle construction and the date of a groundbreaking ceremony will be determined soon.
