The Port Isabel High Lady Tarpons track and field team overcame less than ideal weather conditions last Saturday with another strong performance at their own Tarpon Relays meet.

The team was led by Gabby Torres and Daniela Murchison, both of whom won double gold medals for the second meet in a row.

The team was going for their third first-place points finish in as many meets this season. When the points were totaled up the Lady Tarpons showed in second place, just behind Los Fresnos. Port Isabel ended the day with 118 points to the Lady Falcons’ 122. Harlingen South was third with 116.5 points.

Torres’ best effort in the long jump was a personal best 17 feet 10.5 inches, which was 9.5 inches better than second-place Cierra Pena of Harlingen South. Torres tied with Los Fresnos’ Jaleah Calvillo at 5-04 in the high jump and was awarded first place based on fewer misses at the previous height.

Murchison’s best throw in the shot put was 42-08.5, more than four feet farther than Valeria Granados of Los Fresnos, who threw 38-05.5. Her best distance with the discus was 129-05.

Murchison and Torres both said the cold, damp weather conditions were a problem.

After every throw my hand … like a burning sensation because I was numb,” Murchison said Saturday. “My first attempt was pretty good – 120 feet and I knew I was better than that. So my second attempt was my best.”

Absolutely, it’s hard staying warm while others are jumping,” Torres said after the long jump. “It was a little rough at first. I wasn’t jumping as far as I was expecting. I was really looking to clear 5-06 (high jump) but I’ll take 5-04.
