The South Padre Island City Council met Friday for a special meeting to cover a few additional items for the month of March.
Discussions continued on the improvement of Gulf Boulevard, which includes a sidewalk on the west side of the street and a bike lane on the east side, along with other improvements designed to make the street safer and more aesthetically pleasing. Bids opened Thursday for Phase 3 development which would run from Constellation Drive to Saturn Lane. The City received only two bids, but according to Public Works Director Armando Gutierrez, both were good options that were below their original estimate and at a lower cost than previous improvements. The lowest bid was provided by Zimmerman Construction of Burnet, Texas who have completed other projects in the Rio Grande Valley as well as multimillion dollar projects in Corpus Christi, Austin, and more. Gutierrez recommended the Council approve the bid.
Another item under consideration was to extend the improvements past Gardenia Street based on the low bid price, but also because the improvements are being partially funded by a grant from the General Land Office (GLO). The original improvement plans — which were submitted two years ago — included all seven blocks.
