The body of a 74-year-old homeless man was discovered Friday at approximately 5:23 p.m. according to a statement released by the Cameron County Park Rangers.

The man, whose name is not being released pending notification of next of kin, was living in an elaborate campsite hidden in the dunes between Beach Accesses 4 and 5. “It’s just right next to The Shores. … It’s right across the street from the old horse stables. It’s about … a quarter mile south of Beach Access No. 4,” said Cameron County Parks Director Joe E. Vega Wednesday. According to Vega, evidence suggests the man had been camping in that location for over a year.

“He had been living there for quite some time. He was living right behind the dunes. That’s where he had his camp set,” Vega said, adding that the site isn’t visible from the road or the beach. The body was discovered after another person — who knew the deceased — noticed his absence and went looking for him, Vega said.
