A new summer activity has been added for residents and visitors to the Laguna Madre area.

The Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce will host the 2015 Summer Longest Causeway Run and Fitness Walk on June 6.

“This is a unique opportunity to cross the Causeway on foot,” said Port Isabel Chamber of Commerce President Betty Wells, who anticipates between 3,000 and 4,000 people to participate.

The summer causeway run/walk is fashioned after the popular 31-year old January event, with a reverse course planned.

The 6.2 mile run course begins at Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South Padre Island and finishes at the new Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center. Runners will also travel along a waterfront loop through Isla Blanca State Park before heading over the causeway to Port Isabel. Walkers in the 3.1 mile-long event will also start at Schlitterbahn and end at the Port Isabel Event and Cultural Center, where awards ceremonies will be held at the conclusion of the race, Wells said. The course route and online registration can be found at the chamber’s website at portisabelchamber.com or its Facebook site. Payment can also be made online.

Race time for runners is at 8 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. for walkers.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female runners in each category. All participants who cross the finish line will receive medals. “We think that everyone who crosses the causeway and finishes the race is a winner,” the chamber president said.

“June is a slower time for tourists. We hope to bring more visitors who will stay in the area and experience dining and shopping here,” Wells said. “We start the race early because of the traffic situation and the temperature,” she said. “I can guarantee you that it won’t be 37 degrees like it was at the January causeway run and walk earlier this year,” she added.

“The 2015 Summer Longest Causeway Run and Fitness Walk is a benefit event for the Chamber and helps fund our programs and events as a whole,” she said, adding the event is the “best example of collaboration between the City of Port Isabel, South Padre Island, Cameron County and Texas Department of Transportation.”

Registration fee are $25 for walkers, $30 for runners and $15 for students and military, regardless of whether the participant is a walker or runner. Runners will receive a timing chip to help determine an accurate finish time.
