Laguna Vista Councilmen stood up for the voters Tuesday night at their regular monthly meeting.
A resolution of support that would allow voters a say in the creation of a Cameron County healthcare district, through a local election, drew the unanimous support of the Town Council at the meeting.
Resolution 2015-12 expresses “full support for the bills filed, or to be filed, in the 84th Texas Legislature to allow the voters of Cameron County to choose to create a Cameron County Healthcare District through a future local election.”
However, councilmembers were quick to express opinions that their action did not necessarily mean they would support a tax increase to create the district, but rather would allow voters to weigh-in on the matter.
Texas lawmakers in Austin are working on a bill that would put the creation of a Cameron County healthcare district on the ballot as early as November. The proposed healthcare district would be similar to one created in Hidaldo County.
