Murchison Primed for State

Special to the PRESS

Daniela Murchison is primed and ready to go for this weekend’s UIL 2015 State High School Track and Field Meet.  She will be trying to win a third consecutive gold medal in the shot put.  She will also compete in the discus, and both events will be held this Friday, May 15th.

“I’m not too nervous right now, ‘cause it’s still early in the week,” Murchison said Monday.  “But I’m really excited and pumped to go.  I really want to go up there and win again.”

Murchison has qualified for the state meet as a thrower all four years of her high school career at Port Isabel.  She made it in the discus event as a freshman and was a state qualifier in both events in 2013 and ‘14.

“We’re all pretty excited,” head Lady Tarpon track and field coach Julie Breedlove said Monday.  “And I know she’s ready to get up there and go for that third gold medal.”

Breedlove said that most of the credit for her success in the two events belongs to Murchison herself; “Daniela really pushes herself and really works hard.  She knows what she wants and she goes after it.”

Assistant coach Johnny Galvan has been Murchison’s throwing coach the past two seasons and believes she is more than ready for the challenge she faces this week.  “She’s been up and down at the meets this year,” Galvan said this week.  “She threw her best at the Meet of Champs.”

Murchison launched the 12-pound ball a distance of 46-01.5 at the Meet of Champs at Weslaco on March 28th.  The distance was a Valley and meet record as well as a personal best for Murchison.  She enters the state meet as the No.1 seed among the eight finalists because her PB is the longest of the group.  Her gold medal-winning throw at last year’s state meet was 44 feet even.

Murchison is seeded No.2 in the discus and was the bronze medalist in that event at state last year.  She has the third best distance with the discus in the Valley this year at 134-07.  Celine Markert of Yoakum is the two-time defending state champion in the event.  Her winning distance last year was 145-00 and she was the bronze medalist in the shot put with a throw of 41-04 ¾.  Markert’s best toss this season is 147-10.

“You always have a shot because you never know.  Her (Markert’s) best throw (is) over 160.  If she has a bad day … maybe we’ll come back with two golds,” said Coach Galvan regarding Markert’s chances.

The 2015 UIL State High School Track and Field Meet is being held at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin today (Thursday) through Saturday.  The Class 4A girls’ discus competition will get started at 10 a.m. Friday and the shot put event is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start.
